The Osaka University Center for the Study of Communication-Design(CSCD) was established in April 2005 as a new Osaka University research center. Members from diverse fields of study are carrying out research in Communication-Design, and working at developing its potentials.
What is CSCD?
Our Challenge
From macroscopic issues such as environmental pollution and the depletion of resources to microscopic biotechnology such as gene treatment and regenerative medicine, every single advanced issue of science and technology is deeply related to our lives and welfare. However as a high level of specialist knowledge is required to understand the issues inherent in such specialized fields, it is not always easy for the general public to understand the intention and direction of these fields, in order to have an influence on the planning and direction of future research. Therefore, aspects of contention such as the views of an offended party versus the views of the offending party tend to stand out. From the macroscopic scene of science and technology policy decisions, to an individual making decisions regarding their medical treatment, welfare and education, an interface structure for appropriate mutual understanding is missing for parties with different interests or in different social positions - especially among experts of different specialties and between experts and non-experts. Such a serious situation exists in almost all countries, including Japan. We are challenging this situation from the perspective of Communication-Design.
Human Resource Development
Empowering innovative design is one of three educational objectives of Osaka University. In this center, we focus on communicational competence and liberal education, mainly targeted at the graduate school level. We have created an original education program with a long-term perspective, aimed at developing abilities in communication at research sites (especially field research), and for building human resources that can enable interactive problem-solving through discussion.
University-Society Coordination
This center aims to be a window for ”University-Society Coordination" in providing support to the general public by developing a network of various communication methods. Industry, academic, and government experts should have means to discuss and solve issues related to the welfare and safety of the general public with the public to whom these issues matter most. We will attempt to train mediators who will mediate communication between such experts and the general public. We also aim to design social forums for interested parties of citizens to participate in planning and conceptualizing a society, which inspires its members to think ”I want to live in this kind of environment" and ”I want to grow old in this kind of society."
Integration of Humanities and Sciences
Faculty members from both Sciences and Humanities collaborate together with young researchers at this Center for Communication-Design. The Center plans to act as a base for creating and delivering research projects out of an Integration of Sciences and Humanities.
Our Operation
In order to actively promote the activities of this Center, we will develop the following 4 operations.
- We will develop the natural gifts of graduate students and young researchers to promote research through communication with the general public as non-experts with a broad point of view, common sense and sound judgment.
- We will train experts such as ”Science and Technology Communicators", who will mediate the various processes of Science and Technology and aid in dispute resolution.
- We will build a network for mediating ”science research," the general public and non-profit organizations (NPOs), to develop various communication methods to build a public consensus with scientific research directions.
- We will create a Communication-Design related research program for the integration of the Humanities and Sciences.
